authentic Indonesian wooden stick puppets
Description You are bidding on two original Wayang Golek stick puppets from Java, Indonesia. Not a modern tourist replica; estimated age ca. 40-50 years old. Full length (including the robe) ca. 30" (76cm) and 26" (66cm) respectively; height when displayed ca. 26" (66 cm) and 22" (56 cm). In nice condition but showing wear and age as is to be expected; cf. pictures. The seam on the back of the green cotton robe is torn (not visible from the front; easy to repair). The yellow/brown robe of the other puppet has faded and stained in some places and has several cuts and tears (not too obvious when viewed from the front; can be repaired or replaced). Attractive and very decorative display items.
Note - since these are not the recent tourist replicas, a display stand is not included. The simplest way to display the puppets is to stick the central control rod in a bottle, half filled with sand.
Additional information Wayang golek are wooden doll puppets that are operated from below by rods connected to the hands and a central control rod that runs through the body to the head. The simple construction of the puppets belies their versatility, expressiveness and aptitude for imitating human dance. Little is known for certain about the history of wayang golek, but scholars have speculated that it most likely originated in China and arrived in Java sometime in the 17th century. Some of the oldest traditions of wayang golek are from the north coast of Java. (Wikipaedia).
