19Th Century HAT STORE Metal Trade Sign -- A Full Size 3-Dimensional Gentleman’s Hat

This scarce and desirable piece of folk art is an authentic 19th Century trade sign. It would have been used on the outside of a gentleman’s hat store, and was recently rescued from a New Hampshire attic.

It is made of tin and the internal structure shows that it would have been attached to the outside of the store with a bracket that had a square cross-section bar that would have fit into the square receptacle you can see in the last photo. The hat is 8” tall and 10½” wide at the widest point. The hat has lost most of its original paint and has surface rust but you can still get a good idea of how it would have looked in its full glory.
