Here we have an extraordinary find. Papunya boards of this vintage and beauty are highly sought after and this artist is one of the early and important pioneers of the Papunya movement. In 1971 Geoffrey Bardon a white school teacher assigned to the Papunya School began a project of painting a mural using the aboriginal colors and traditional iconography. Along with three other artists, Billy Stockman, took over the project which became the first piece of Central Desert Art to be exhibited. This painting represented the "Honey Ant Dreaming". In this particular work the composition depicts "Totem Circle" - Man Dreaming about corroboree painting body in preparation." These totems were typically etched into the ground by the tribesmen. A full description and original notes is attached to the back of the painting along with the artist's name. Complete documentation like this is rarely seen on these early paintings. This example measures 51 x 40cm and the original frame measures 72 x 62cm in size. The painting dates to 1974. This painting along with the other paintings that I am listing today were all deaccessioned from a local gallery in Brisbane. Important early works rarely show and never appear on ebay. This piece is in excellent condition. Bid with confidence! For this piece it will cost $53 AUD to post anywhere in the world and $20 within Australia.
