A Lower Sepik mask featuring numerous eroded layers of red trade paint over black, patinated pigment. The result of these colors is a complex and textured color scheme offering an extremely powerful and colorful presence. The carving itself is quite bold and well proportioned. Both eyes are of what appear to be European (German?) trade rings and the final touch is a remaining ear ornament of small shells and another trade ring. There are two old stable cracks at the top, neither interfering with the structural integrity or aesthetic of the piece. The inside shows appropriate age and use with encrustations. 1930’s ? Reserve set well below “dealer price” for a comparable or even inferior piece, certainly far less than an auction house (see lot 531 sold at the last Bonham's auction for $6,000.)
The mask on its base is 21” tall, itself, without the base, it is 17.5” (44.5cm) tall, 7” (18cm) wide and 5.50” (13.5cm) deep. The custom bronze base is included. Ex Michael Hamson.
I am always interested in acquiring Tongan and Fijian clubs and will buy or trade for similar.
