A very rare old Northwest Coast Salish or Klickitat Indian pictorial imbricated berry basket circa 1890-1900. This incredible tightly woven early basket depicts a unusual representation of a floral pattern interspersed between the mountain peaks and diamond design elements. Woven from split cedar bark and root with the naturally dyed bear grasses in red, yellow and orange to produce the stunning deigns that encircle the basket. Note the presence of the original doe skin ties that would have facilitated a tump line for carrying indicating this was a basket made for native use. The basket measures 8 1/2" in diameter at the top and stands 9 1/4 " tall, it is in very well preserved condition with no splits damages or repairs noted, normal fading of the natural dye elements as expected with great age and minor stains as expected with great age and use. Note all the top raised rim is original and intact. This is a museum quality basket, best of the best type that will make an excellent display item and a fine addition to anyone's collection.
