PHILIPPINE BONTOC SHIELD W/ BOLD PAINT
Origin/ Tribe: Philippines, N. Luzon, Bontoc People
Age: Likely Circa 1930's
Materials: Hardwood, Rattan, Polychrome Oil Paint
Size: Height 33.5" (85 cm), Width 12" (30.5 cm)
Provenance: Acquired from the Ken and Rosella Dalke Collection of Tribal Weapons, California
Description: This striking shield is decorated with bold trade paint in red, yellow and charcoal. Sometimes warriors would add personal touches to shields like this. If a design element on a shield was just unusual enough, an enemy might look at it a second "too long" allowing him to be defeated or kill. The paint is oxidized and "alligatored" from age and exposure. In good condition with no noteworthy loss or damage.
