Hello and welcome to my auction.
For sale you have a wonderful example of Wandjina Aboriginal bark painting from the Kimberley Region of Western Australia, 53cm in height, by the important Kalumburu artist Rosie Karedada (born 1927). What makes of this example a remarkable one is not only the exceptionally good condition, with almost all the surface strongly retaining its pigments (and we know how remarkable that is with old examples!), but also the quality of this full-figure Wandjina (most of these medium-sized examples depict only the bust or half-figure)!! Please note the oval shape of the eyes, and the overall finesse of the work. This particular example is in my opinion the best work by Rosie Karedada I have seen, far more refined than the later examples (still very popular at major auction houses), clearly resembling the work of the great artist and most important Wandjina bark painter Alec Mingelmanganu (1905 - 1981) whose work has played a major influence on the early production of Rosie and her sister, Lily Karedada. Please note the shape of the eyes, and the position of the shoulders, details that are particularly distinctive of Mingelmanganu's work. In conclusion, this very early work by Rosie is a magnificent example of this highly sought after subject, and a rare testimony of the power of this ancient Aboriginal art form!
This bark comes with an old lable (please see pictures) and collection number, with the name of the artist written in pen on the back of the bark. It comes from an American collection.
