ABOUT SERIGRAPHS
A serigraph is produced by screen printing. The process has been
popularly known as silkscreen printing because screens were first made of silk.
Today, however, screens can be made of paper, metal, or plastics. The screen is
tightly stretched across a frame. The design is made by blocking out the entire
screen, except for the area to be printed.
Paper is placed under the screen, ink is then
pressed over the screen through the open or unblocked areas onto the paper
below, thereby creating the original art image. Whenever a serigraph is printed
in more than one color, a separate screen must be made for each color. Each
color is applied separately through a screen blocked out to allow the color to
fall only where wanted on the design.
ABOUT THE ARTIST
James Denmark was born in Winter Haven, Florida in 1936 into a
family of artists. He was exposed to color and form at an early age by his
grandmother, a wire sculptor and quilt artist, by his grandfather, a bricklayer
noted for his unique custom designed molds, and his mother who had an intuitive
feeling for design and a fastidiousness which she expressed in everything she
did.
He entered Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University (FAMU) on a sports
scholarship. While pursuing a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree at FAMU, Denmark came
under the tutelage of the artist and acclaimed African American Art historian,
Dr. Samella Lewis who exposed him to the great traditions and accomplishments
of the African American art movement. After graduating from FAMU, Denmark moved
to Brooklyn, New York and began a career as an art teacher in the public school
system and, in 1976, earned his Master of Fine Art degree from Pratt Institute
of Fine Arts in New York. During this period Denmark met and was nurtured by an
immensely talented community of artists which included Norman Lewis, Romare
Bearden, Jacob Lawrence and Ernest Crichlow. He was also influenced by the
abstract expressionists Jackson Pollock, William deKooning and Clifford Still.
Denmark discovered a natural affinity for the largely improvisational medium of
collage and quickly developed his own unique and easily identifiable style. He
has come to be recognized as a master of the medium and is considered by many
to be heir apparent to the great collagist Romare Bearden.
Denmark has had over 60 solo exhibitions and has participated in a number of
group shows. His work is represented in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New
York, as well as in many private and corporate collections in the U.s, Japan,
South America and Africa.
He recently moved from Brooklyn, New York to settle in Yemassee, South
Carolina.
