earthquake in Haiti - The Clinton Global Initiative worked out an

ABOUT THE ARTIST
Serge Jolimeau was born in the village of Croix des Bouquets, Haiti in
1952. The son of a cabinet-maker, Jolimeau began apprenticing under metal
sculptor Seresier Louis-Juste at the age of 12. Today he is one of
Haiti’s two leading metal sculptors. Known for his daring inventions and ever
fertile imagination, Jolimeau integrates modernist elements into his work
superimposed on a primitive iconography evolving around Haitian spirituality
and the practice of Voodoo. Much of his work is reminiscent of Egyptian imagery,
which sets him apart from other Haitian sculptors of the time, as it is
expresses supernatural subject matter with a unique sensuality. He has
exhibited in numerous exhibitions in Europe, the Americas and the Caribbean
including the Brooklyn Museum and LACITA in Biarritz, France. He has been
included in over fifty art books.
Haitian Metal Art
The art of Haiti is known worldwide. One of the unique forms of Haitian art is
the sculptures hand-crafted from recycled steel drums. Metal drums, once
used for transporting oil or other products are purchased near the port in the
capitol city of Port au Prince. They are brought to the neighboring town of
Croix-des-Bouquets by hand cart or on top of a taxi to the metal
artists' workshop. Croix-des-Bouquets is the center of the Haitian metalwork
movement. When driving through the streets of the city, a common sound is the
cacophony from the pounding on the drums, as the metal artists toil away at
their craft. As in any art form, some metal work is far superior to others, and
some artists, such as Jolimeau, have elevated their art to the highest levels
of creativity, even finding their way into museums.
From Oil Drum to Art
Using recycled 55-gallon oil drums, the artist first removes both round ends of
the drum and places these inside the cylinder along with dried banana or
sugar cane leaves. He sets this on fire, to burn off any paint or
residue. When the drums are cooled down, the artist then cuts the
cylinder from top to bottom. The flattening process is a sight to behold, as
one of the artist's helpers will climb inside the drum and using all his
weight, push with feet, legs, arms and shoulders to open it up. It is
then pounded into a flattened "metal canvas" of
approximately 3" x 6". With chalk, the design is drawn (freehand, or
from a stencil) onto the metal sheet. Now, the real art work begins. Using
hammer, chisel and various elementary tools, the shape is cut and the various
decorative patterns are pounded into the metal, creating a unique and treasured
piece of primitive art. The finished design is signed by the artist and
coated with a protective finish.
